UFC 97 Controversy - Could it Affect UFC 100?

13 February 2009 Comments

As reported yesterday, UFC 97 set for April in Montreal, Canada has hit a major snag.  According to the Quebec Athletic Commission, the event cannot go on unless the UFC accepts some significant rule changes, most notably doing away with elbows and knees, fighting in a smaller octagon, and stopping the fight whenever a fighter falls to the ground.  Needless to say, that’s the kind of news that will cause Dana to set all kinds of F-bomb records.

So what’s the UFC to do?  There have been talks about cancellation, and even moving the event out of Montreal. Canceling an event that has already started selling tickets, and with big names such as Anderson Silva, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, and Chuck Liddell already inked, would be an extremely extreme measure.  Expect the UFC to negotiate with the Quebec Athletic Commission to see if compromises can’t be made; if the UFC can’t hold its event without some major changes, expect them to move it somewhere else - even back to the States if they have to.  UFC 97 will go on - and none of this will affect UFC 100 planned for July 11 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
